bombardier-invest-manufacturing-mexicoCan Am off road vehicle engines will soon be manufactured in Mexico in the interior city of Querétaro by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP).

In addition the aforementioned, the company also has plans in place for the future manufacture of composite decks and hulls. At a later stage in the development of the Mexican Manufacturing project BRP will also do the full assembly of the popular Sea-Doo recreational watercraft at its Querétaro plant, as well.

In a press conference, the state governor José Calzada Rovirosa and Vice President of Public and Government Relations of BRP, Pierre Pichette, detailed the investment.

BRPs new facility will be built in three stages. These three stages will span a period of three years construction time. It will be built in Querétaro's industrial park, and will be 600,000 square feet in size. Currently Rotax engines used in the product are being manufactured at a BRP facility in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. When first phase construction is finished, this work will be transferred to Querétaro. The manufacture of Rotax engines in the new plant will free up space and capacity in Ciudad Juarez for Bombardier Recreational Products to manufacture its ATVs and side-by-side vehicles in that border city.

BRP's Querétaro's project represents an investment of US $30 million and will result in the creation of three hundred jobs. The first phase of plant construction is slated to be finished by the end of 2012. And the second phase, with US $50 million investment, it could exceed the thousand jobs.

"We'll be manufacturing the engines and fiberglass boat parts in Queretaro, so that in a few months we'll be practically the only producers of these machines," Calzada said.

BRP officials stated the rational for their choice of Querétaro for their new project as including the following points: Proximity to Mexico City, a well-developed infrastructure for industry and the availability of a trained and productive talent pool.

After the production capacity for engines is put into place in 2012, the BRP will begin to install the items required to begin to manufacture composite hulls and decks for the Sea Doo water craft. Over the period of 2014 – 2015 the manufacture of the entire product will be transferred from Canada to Mexico, which will free up capacity at Bombardier's Canadian facility to engage in other production activities.
