Tijuana Innovadora

Tijuana is one of Mexico's fastest growing cities, is the main City in Baja California, and is part of the international San Diego –Tijuana metropolitan area, with an ever-growing and highly motivated population that is coming close to four million.

It is the largest manufacturing base for Medical Devices in the world. It has a thriving Aerospace Industry, and has benefited from the tri-fold growth in Mexico of manufacturing companies in the industry from 100 in 2004, to 300 in 2012. Tijuana opened a World Trade Center in 2011. Major global brands such as Kyocera, Nissan and Plantronics have amongst their most successful Mexico manufacturing operations. There are many others, and ABC is one of them.

ABC was featured in the San Diego Business Journal in 2010 alongside Kyocera as a 'Success Story'. In the intervening two years, ABC's employees have almost doubled to 420, and substantial investment in new presses, finishing plants and quality control measurement equipment and systems has been made. ISO 9001-2008 certification was awarded last year.
One reason for Tijuana's growth is its immediate proximity to the U.S. border with San Diego, California. Certainly, ABC similarly benefits, and exports to the U.S. and Canada have risen to 85% of production. Just last week, ABC was a nominee as 'Exporter of the Year' at the San Diego World Trade Center's International Business Leadership Awards.

The Otay Mesa Port of Entry, adjacent to Tijuana International Airport, is the third busiest along the Mexico-U.S. Border. In 2011, more than 744,000 trucks carried nearly $33 billion worth of imports and exports through Otay Mesa, located just a few miles from ABC's plant. This is its peak amount since 1998. On the U.S. side, the I-905 extension to the border was opened this year. A major investment program to expand the crossing will be completed by December 2015.
ABC's priority is on-time delivery. Even longer distances such as to the North eastern United States and to Canada, are serviced by an experienced logistics and supply chain management team. And we are currently obtaining C-PTAT certification. The location of Tijuana offers such an ideal manufacturing solution, and one that has only benefits for customers wherever they may be in North America. The referred-to improvements underpin just one reason so many of the World's leading manufacturers in growth industries are choosing Tijuana.

Another reason is the emphasis upon investment and excellence in education including all disciplines in engineering. In The Wall Street Journal Sept 9th, 2012, it was reported that 'there are 113,000 new engineers graduating in Mexico every single year, more than in Germany, or Canada or Brazil, and this number represents twice the rate graduating in the U.S'.

Then there is culture. The main cultural center in Tijuana is hosting Tijuana Innovadora (in English means innovative) right now, with a packed program for 12 hours a day from October 11th to October 21st, 2012. This flagship event will include major exhibits from manufacturers and service providers across a broad range of industries. The physical exhibition will be complemented with presentations from major business leaders and intellectuals from within Tijuana and Mexico as a whole, and performances from some of the leading musicians, singers and other artists from Tijuana and beyond. The Program for the 10 days is divided into 'Creativity' 'Industrial' and 'Humanities'. For more information, please visit: http://tijuanainnovadora.com/

Tijuana Innovadora is an Expo designed to showcase to Tijuanans, and to the Baja region of Mexico in particular, but also to the U.S. and beyond, but especially Tijuana's neighbors in Southern California, just how vibrant and resourceful a City Tijuana is. The purpose also is to promote all the huge opportunities Tijuana offers, both for residents, and the whole of North America. Few cities, not even New York or London, as far as is known, have tried something of this magnitude.
