New U.S. Tariffs on Mexico and Canada Set to Take Effect February 1, 2025
- Hits: 243
The Biden administration has confirmed that new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will take effect on Saturday, February 1, 2025. These tariffs impose a 25% duty on goods from both countries, along with a 10% tariff on imports from China.
According to the White House, these measures are part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to address illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking into the United States. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the tariffs reflect the president’s commitment to his policy agenda.
However, conflicting reports suggest that the tariffs may instead begin on March 1, 2025, and could include exemptions for certain imports. No official decision has been announced regarding these potential adjustments.
Both Mexico and Canada have stated that they are prepared to retaliate if the tariffs move forward as planned. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
