Aerospace Parts for U.S. Defense Industry are Manufactured in Tijuana

Approximately $500 million worth of aerospace components utilized by the U.S. defense industry is manufacture in Mexico, in the border city of Tijuana. This information was shared with attendees at the "Aerocamp Techba Seminar 2012" which was recently held there.
Tomás Sibaja, who is the president of the Aerospace Industry Cluster promotion agency of Baja California, noted that there has been an aerospace industry presence in Tijuana for approximately the last forty years, and that some of the items that are produced in the sector include components and assemblies that are integrated into systems utilized by the United States in its defense industry. The items are manufactured under strict rules and regulations that have been formulated by United States government.
Sibaja cited Department of Defense Budget cuts as a circumstance that has caused an uptick in this type of manufacturing in his state, and estimates that 40% of the aerospace manufacturing that occurs in Baja California is related to the elaboration of products that have defense industry end uses. Today approximately 30,000 individuals are employed by Baja California aerospace industry suppliers. Production value averages about $1.2 billion annually.
Another individual present at the Aerocamp Techba event, Eugenio Marín, the director general of Techba Europe, made it a point to mention that aerospace manufacturers in Mexico are not only involve sending parts and components to U.S. defense industry buyers, but also to national defense industries in both Canada and the European Union.
