CPI (Co-Production International) used its Shelter Services Company program to facilitate UFP Technologies’ fast ramp up: from building acquisition to on-site production in just 90 days.
UFP Technologies, with headquarters in Newburyport, MA, designs and manufactures components, subassemblies, products, and packaging that use specialized foams, films, and plastics, primarily for the medical market. UFP’s Tijuana plant will provide engineered solutions for its UFP MedTech division.
CPI, based in San Diego, is registered under Mexico’s Maquiladora program to manage the process of setting up and operating a company in Mexico. CPI worked closely with UFP Technologies to find a location and to coordinate with contractors to quickly install tenant improvements, which included a clean room and other specifications that meet US FDA requirements. Once improvements were in place, UFP Technologies benefited from CPI’s Mexico Shelter Program suite of admin support programs, including international trade and compliance for license and permits and for certification under environmental health and safety regulations. CPI also provided HR support, including hiring close to 150 employees, including the plant manager.
With the new facility, UFP Technologies is in an ideal position to help ease healthcare supply chain issues by shipping medical devices to the U.S. by rail, truck, air, or sea. UFP Technologies also has the potential to expand its client roster by serving as a contract manufacturer and assembly facility for other manufacturers in Mexico.
“We chose Tijuana for its proximity to our customers and its established reputation as a medical device manufacturing hub,” said Steve Cardin, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UFP Technologies. “Our state-of-the-art Tijuana medical manufacturing facility provides our customers with a near-shore manufacturing source that meets the high level of quality and innovation that they expect from UFP MedTech.”
“U.S. and global manufacturers invest ln Mexico-based facilities to reduce shipping times, labor costs, and supply chain obstacles,” said Veronica Contreras, CPI’s VP of Sales and Marketing. “For UFP Technologies, we helped them ramp up and launch very quickly. We now manage day-to-day administrative duties, which allows UFP to focus entirely on their medical market customers.”
“As a shelter services provider, we are delighted to serve the needs of our client partners like UFP Technologies,” said Denisse Martinez, CPI Director of Marketing. “CPI attends to every detail of manufacturing expansion projects as if it were our own company. At CPI, our team becomes your team.”
