Can Baja California benefit from the worldwide "just in case" industry?

Can Baja California Benefit from the Worldwide “Just in Case” Industry?

"The global economic dynamics have generated what I have called a perfect storm, where Mexico has every opportunity to become a manufacturing hub for the entire continent," said Román Caso Espinosa.

The CEO of Shelter Co-Production International and member of Canacintra Tijuana´s supply commission said that now is a great time for Mexico, and especially for Baja California, to get more involved in the supply chains of large industries.

He said that one of the challenges for tractor companies is to get people to accept them, create a culture of investing, and have the patience to lead the national industry by the hand to meet the standards.

"By legal and fiscal definition of the export industry, the product or service that is made there is for a foreign market; therefore, it has to comply with the standards of another place, with times, with amounts, and as this commercial link has never been developed, the maquiladora industry has developed its own methods," he noted.

The business advisor mentioned that now when this supply chain disruption occurred after the pandemic, one of the most difficult locks for the large industry was broken, which was to look for other options.

"This was a consequence of global conditions, so we went from "just-in-time" to "just-in-case" because autonomous production or supply poles have been created, hence we have customers who have decided to open production poles in the state," he detailed.

At the mass market level, he said, the low-cost paradigm has changed, where people prefer to pay if the product arrives, that is why we talk about "regional sourcing" or regional supply sources, so as not to be left without the capacity for business continuity.

In this sense, Román Caso emphasized that what Mexico and Baja California can do is take advantage of what he called "this perfect storm" in an intelligent and sustainable way.

"We must bring together these two mentalities: that of big industry and that of national supply, where Mexican manufacturing companies must learn to get out of their comfort zones and adapt to the demands of this market, because these export operations are business models that are not being taken advantage of correctly," he considered.

"If we had a more open economic policy, more focused on manufacturing in Mexico for the continent, we would be much better off, but for that to happen several things would have to be aligned, hopefully it could be faster, but at the end of the day Mexican industry has the opportunity and the mission to do so," he concluded.
