Greatbatch consolidation said to have no impact on WNY

A realignment of orthopaedics manufacturing operations abroad is expected to have no impact on Greatbatch Medical's operations in Western New York.

The company, a subsidiary of Greatbatch Inc. , announced today that it is exploring the possibility of consolidating most of its manufacturing operations by shutting down two sites in Switzerland and moving the manufacturing lines to Fort Wayne, Ind., and Tijuana, Mexico. The proposal, which will be considered over the coming weeks, is designed to enhance operating efficiencies and drive growth opportunities globally, the company said.

Greatbatch Medical has manufacturing sites in Orvin and Corgemont, Switzerland. If the proposal is approved, the company said it would transfer most operations into existing facilities in Fort Wayne and Tijuana, Mexico by the end of 2013. The Switzerland sites employ 196 individuals, 90 of whom could be affected.

In accordance with Swiss regulations, employees have a consultation period to provide individual and collective input on the proposed plan prior to a final decision. The intended close of the consultation period is July 20, 2012.

Greatbatch Medical provides design and manufacture of technologies used in medical devices for the cardiac rhythm management, neuromodulation, vascular access and orthopaedic markets.

With 3,500 employees worldwide, Greatbatch Inc. employs 680 workers at its Clarence and Alden sites, home to the company's manufacturing and research and development functions. The company, which makes implantable medical devices, recently announced plans to move corporate offices to Dallas.
