Deal Reached: Trump Cancels Tariffs on Imports from Mexico
- Hits: 1227
On Friday, U.S. President Trump announced that a deal was reached between the United States and Mexico, effectively canceling the tariffs on imports from Mexico that were to go into effect on Monday.
Mexico agreed to use their National Guard along their southern border with Guatemala to manage migration, and to offer jobs, healthcare and education to refugees waiting on their asylum cases to be decided by the United States. The United States committed to accelerating the adjudication of asylum claims.
Trump had planned for new tariffs on imports from Mexico, one of our most valuable trading partners and fellow-member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now called the U.S-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The tariffs were the U.S. Administration’s attempt to strong-arm Mexico into curbing the arrival of Central American refugees legally seeking asylum at U.S. ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border. The tariffs were going to start at 5% each month, reaching 25% by October.
“The United States and Mexico reiterate their previous statement of December 18, 2018, that both countries recognize the strong links between promoting development and economic growth in southern Mexico and the success of promoting prosperity, good governance and security in Central America. The United States and Mexico welcome the Comprehensive Development Plan launched by the Government of Mexico in concert with the Governments of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to promote these goals,” said the United States Department of State in a press release.
