Trump and Chinese Tariffs: Surprise Announcement on $300 Billion in Chinese Imports to Go into Effect on September 1
- Hits: 978
President Trump made a surprise tariff announcement today that will impose a new 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports with an effective date of September 1st. This move came after trade talks between the U.S. and China in Shanghai this week.
While President Trump remarked that the talks were constructive, he tweeted that the new tariffs were in response China’s desire to renegotiate a previous deal prior to signing, as well as the failure to buy US agricultural products and stop fentanyl sales as promised. China insists it has purchased millions of tons of U.S. soybeans since July 19th, as well as cotton, pork and sorghum.
This new tariff would be in addition to previously applicable tariffs. The new list of affected products covers apparel, footwear, manufactured textile products, amongst other items. The proposed list can be viewed here: https://ustr.gov/issue-areas/enforcement/section-301-investigations/section-301-china/300-billion-trade-action
It is unclear whether these tariffs will be lifted should China be deemed compliant with U.S. demands. In this ever-changing trade environment, CPI is here to support you. Take a look at our tariff and trade resources for manufacturers and do let us know if you have any questions!
