San Luis Potosí is centrally located in the El Bajio manufacturing region of Mexico. Representing one of the five fastest growing economies in Mexico, San Luis Potosí shares a border with eight Mexican states. The state’s location gives businesses access to 73 million potential customers and 78.8% of the national GDP within a 500-kilometer radius of its capital. San Luis Potosí has a booming automotive and auto parts manufacturing industry in Mexico. Automotive exports rang in at $6,424.6 million dollars in 2015; double the amount of the other manufacturing sectors in the state. There are 178 automotive and auto parts manufacturers in San Luis Potosí, with 40 additional companies about to start. This sector employs over 68,000 people.

San Luis Potosí: Fostering Home Appliance Manufacturing and Thriving Mining Sector

  • General Motors assembles its Chevrolet Aveo and Trax and BMW Group Mexico assembles its Series 3 sedan in San Luis Potosí.
  • BMW Group Mexico invested $1 billion dollars for their new 30-hectare assembly plant in the Logistik industrial park, where they will employ an estimated 1,500 people and use 500 high-tech robots. The new BMW plant is expected to be fully online by the middle of 2019.
Additionally, major international car manufacturers such as VW, Toyota, Volvo, Fiat, Honda, Audi, Nissan, Mitsubishi, amongst a dozen others, have established distribution centers in San Luis Potosí to countries throughout Latin America, North America and Europe.

San Luis Potosí is also home to home appliance manufacturing companies and a long-standing mining industry. San Luis Potosí has 22 home appliance manufacturers (including the Mexican giant, Mabe) with an over 10,000-strong workforce, exporting products to the United States, Canada, Colombia, Chile, and Costa Rica. There are 136 mining companies in the state that are responsible for $12,400 million dollars a year in production.

As a logistics center of Mexico, San Luis Potosí has three customs sections and two Strategic Enforced Enclosures (RFE): Intermodal Cargo Terminal (customs section / RFE), Logistik Free Trade Zone (customs section / RFE) and Estafeta International Logistics Center (customs section). According to the San Luis Potosí Secretary of Economic Development, the state is considered the third zone in the world with more logistic potential, only behind Shanghai and Dubai.

The air terminal of San Luis Potosí International Airport is being modernizing with an investment of more than 400 million pesos with a goal of serving more than 1.2 million people annually. ESTAFETA, the Mexican courier company that handles more than 25 million shipments per year, has one of its most important airfreight hubs in San Luis Potosí, with more than half of their shipments going through the state.
